Christmas Markets by Train: A Nine-Day Journey Through Europe
Last December, I treated myself to a Christmas trip to Europe: a nine-day adventure that took me through four countries and seven Christmas markets. Was it exhausting? Absolutely. Would I do it again? Without a doubt (and spoiler alert: I am set to return this December but with new stops + two travel companions).
On average, I walked 16,000 steps a day, hopped on at least one train daily, and discovered just how easy (and magical) it can be to explore Europe during the holiday season. With a little planning and a lot of holiday spirit, I got to soak in twinkling lights, sip steaming mugs of mulled wine, and wander through festive markets that felt straight out of a snow globe.
England: Christmas Lights & Landmarks
My journey began in London, where I wandered past sparkling angels on Regent Street, admired the massive tree at Covent Garden (complete with real snow falling every hour!), and ended my evening with a quiet walk by Big Ben and Westminster Abbey—both glowing against the night sky.
Belgium: Waffles, Chocolate, & Market Magic
Christmas Eve in Brussels was hushed, with shops closing early so families could celebrate together. On Christmas Day, the markets came alive with chalets full of treasures, the sound of church bells, and even a multilingual Santa delighting the crowds.
From there, I ventured to Bruges and Ghent—two Belgian gems. Bruges offered postcard-perfect cobblestone streets, canals, and chocolate galore, while Ghent had a vibrant urban feel with hot food, Belgian beer, and festive activities.
Luxembourg: My Favorite Market
Luxembourg City stole my heart. Spread across five smaller markets, the city’s Christmas cheer was everywhere, from enchanting light displays to traditional dumplings and plenty of glühwein to keep warm. I loved watching children ride the carousels, listening to live music, and strolling through the beautifully lit streets.
France: Snowy Cathedrals and Vin Chaud
In Metz, France, I admired the soaring Gothic cathedral while sipping vin chaud (French mulled wine) to ward off the below-freezing temperatures. Waking up the next morning to snow across the countryside, I boarded a train to Paris, the City of Lights—made even brighter by the holiday season.
Paris gave me sparkling nights at the Louvre and Eiffel Tower, cozy markets in the Jardin des Tuileries, and one of my trip’s most memorable moments: stepping inside the newly restored Notre-Dame, where the sound of ringing bells marked a perfect ending to my Christmas journey.
Why This Trip Worked
Traveling through four countries in nine days sounds overwhelming, but with the right planning, it was seamless. From knowing train routes to choosing centrally located hotels and AirBnB’s, I was able to maximize every moment without feeling lost in logistics.
That’s the kind of strategy and care I bring to my clients at The Orderly Edit. Whether you’re dreaming of a European Christmas market adventure, a summer in the Mediterranean, or a weekend getaway closer to home, I’ll help you design a trip that balances adventure with ease.
